"Demon King" Descendant and Strategy Game Namesake Figure Skates In the Olympics [Winter Olympics]

The inspiration behind Koei’s classic turn-based strategy game Nobunaga’s Ambition lives on, as Nobunaga Oda’s 17th descendant takes to the ice in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Nobunaga Oda was the initiator of the unification of Japan under the rule of the Shogun in the late sixteenth century. 23-year-old Nobunari Oda, Nobunaga’s 17th descendant, is a Japanese figure skater living in Hackensack, New Jersey, who missed the 2007-08 season due to a DUI. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, right? At least when the apple’s branch isn’t several hundred years removed from the trunk. It’s interesting to note that the NBC presented the trivial tie-in during the skater’s introduction last night. “He is the 17th descendant of Nobunaga Oda (1534-1582), the famous Japanese warlord during the age of the civil war and inspiration for the Super Nintendo video game series, Nobunaga’s Ambition.” Far from a Super Nintendo series, the Nobunaga franchise has appeared on at least fourteen different platforms, but who’s counting? Oh yeah, we are. Nobunari Oda Profile [NBC Olympics - Thanks Mark!]

Ice In Their Veins [Night Note]

To: Luke From: Owen I had some real mixed emotions watching the Winter Olympics this weekend. Of course, the death of the Georgian slider on Friday is a tragedy that shatters a lot of enjoyment of a very exciting sport. And I was outraged at the manner in which competition authorities blamed it all on pilot error, which seemed rushed and designed to deflect blame. Because when you look at what these guys do, these might be sporting events requiring more bravery than any other in the world. Luge is just an unbelievably alien concept to my mind – being supine at 80 mph. But then look at alpine skiing. Consider ski jumping, sitting on that bar, looking down that ramp, knowing how far you are going to fly with no way to stop until you land. How you even acquire that kind of fearlessness, and practice for these things without killing yourself, I’ll never know. Some of what you missed: Xbox Live Player Catches Suspected School Shooter Square Enix Probing Altered FFXIII Comparison Shots [Update] Is Street Fighter 3’s Dudley Coming to Super Street Fighter IV? Whenever people think of Bayonetta, they typically think of her black hair suit. That’s not her only outfit, though, and cosplayers know it. Kotaku Japan spotted these three Bayonetta cosplayers at the recent Wonder Festival in Tokyo, as well as Pikachu girls and a hoard of fellow cosplayers. Wonderful Festival is a bi-annual event that is held in the summer and the winter. The main focus is figurines and “garage kits”, but like any gathering of otaku, there is cosplaying. A good thing, no? [ワンフェス10冬]ゲームキャラのコスプレギャラリー [ワンフェス10冬]分身? 幻影? 3人のベヨ姐さんコスプレ! [Kotaku Japan]
