Wii Owners, Do You Like Games About Gladiators? [Wii]

Yeah? Then High Voltage Software ’s Tournament of Legends , coming exclusively to the Wii this May, will give you all the ancient Roman one-on-one fighting you so desperately crave. If Sega’s announcement of Tournament of Legends comes as a surprise, realize that it’s the game formerly known as Gladiator A.D. , the previously more brown fighter from the developers of The Conduit. It’s the same team working on the other Wii game announced at the same time, The Grinder . The game feels more mythological and fantastical than I remember it, featuring playable a Minotaur, Gorgon, Stone Golem and Valkyrie among the fighting ranks. Sega says the 3D fighter supports Wii Remote and Nunchuk controls as well as a Classic Controller option. At one time, it was touted as supporting the Wii MotionPlus accessory, but Sega’s update on the game makes no mention of the add-on. We’ll check in with Sega to see if that’s still the plan for the game’s May launch on Wii. Until then, don’t miss our hands-on impressions of Tournament of Legends , which touch on the single-player quest aspects of High Voltage’s fighter, when it was more sepia toned at last year’s E3.

EA Sports released another seven screenshots of its upcoming FIFA World Cup 2010, offering a look at the Italian, Spanish and American sides, and some wacky French fans. French fans. That’s not a glitch, just some confetti floating across their faces. Italy and Spain walk on to the pitch. The Italian and Spanish sides are introduced. Italy are the defending world champions. Forza Italia! The Americans are grouped with England. England’s looking for its first World Cup victory over the United States since an embarrassing 1-nil defeat in 1950, the only time the two nations have met in this tournament.

MLG Win Ruined By Faulty Xbox 360 [Pro Gaming]

Major League Gaming team Triggers Down came close to advancing towards another tournament win this weekend in Orlando, only to have an equipment failure rob them of the Halo 3 CTF win. As you can see in the video replay, Triggers Down were mere inches away from a win over rival team Classic. All four members of Classic were down, Heinz had the enemy flag, and just a few short steps from the cap the flag dropped, and couldn’t be picked up again. It turns out the host’s Xbox 360 froze up, dropping connection for everyone else at a very inconvenient time. Under Major League Gaming’s tournament rules, any equipment malfunction during a game is grounds for a replay of the round, with few exceptions that didn’t apply to the situation. The replay resulted in Classic trouncing TD 5-2. What a horrible moment that must have been, and with victory that close, one would have thought an exception could be made., Unfortunately, rules are rules, and Triggers Down couldn’t keep it together for the do-over. Super Street Fighter IV FightStick Tournament Edition S Hands-on [Ces10]

A new year, a new Street Fighter and a new update to Mad Catz ’s tournament edition fight stick. We went hands-on with the newer, slimmer Super Street Fighter IV branded model at CES. Is it worth the upgrade? Like our hands-on time with the original Street Fighter IV licensed sticks, the controller impressed mostly for its authentic Sanwa arcade parts and solid construction. Not much has changed here in that regard. What has changed is the footprint, as the Super Street Fighter IV Arcade FightStick: Tournament Edition “S” gets its “S” for its slimmer body. That doesn’t have any real impact on the way the stick plays, but it makes for a better looking chassis. One new tweak to the Tournament Edition “S” is the button input locking mechanism. The toggle switch that made the PlayStation 3 “home” button and Xbox 360 “guide” button inactive now inactivates the start and select buttons on the back of the stick’s base. The other new addition? New Super Street Fighter IV graphics. So there’s that. The newest Super Street Fighter IV Arcade FightStick: Tournament Edition plays just as well and features the same solid construction as the original, easy to recommend if you’re looking for a new arcade accurate control option. The only nitpick I had was the sharp edge on the top plate, which sits about a millimeter or two higher at the seam, rubbing against my delicate, baby soft wrists. Non-wimps probably won’t notice, but fragile flowers like me might. The Super Street Fighter IV Arcade FightStick: Tournament Edition “S” is due to hit North America whenever Super Street Fighter IV does at a $149.99 USD price.

First Look At Japanese Poster For Tekken Movie [Tekken]

Back in early November, Kotaku posted the first Tekken movie sales art . It’s now late December, and time to post the movie’s Japanese poster. Funny how that works. No, not really. The movie is set in 2039, when fighters from around the world compete in the Iron Fist Tournament and centers around character Jin Kazama, who enters the tourney to avenge his mother’s death — something he places the blame on Teken Chairman Heihachi Mishima. Jin hopes by winning the tournament he can get close enough to Mishima to kill him. And no, the actress who plays Kill Bill’s Gogo Yubari is not in this movie. Participating in a Mortal Kombat fight to the death is scary enough as it is, but Johnny Cage’s explanation of how a tournament works, apparently lost on Shang Tsung, is a good public service announcement. That is, if you plan on holding your own Mortal Kombat contest any time soon and plan on letting a four-armed beast with an IQ like Goro’s run the logistics for you. It’ll all make sense when you watch College Humor’s new video. Mortal Kombat Is Not A Tournament [College Humor]
