Meet Left 4 Dead 2’s House Band, The Midnight Riders [Valve]

If you’ve played through Left 4 Dead 2 ’s second campaign, Dark Carnival, you’re likely familiar with the music and pyrotechnic power of the chapter’s fictional rock and roll band, the Midnight Riders. Well, they’ve got their own web site. Shortly after the launch of Left 4 Dead 2, Valve launched the teaser site —seen on posters around Dark Carnival—for the tattooed biker band, offering little more than a portrait of the four-man group and a promise that something is “coming soon.” What could that something be? It could be nothing more than some fiction building, offering background on the Midnight Riders and how they came to escape the events that transpired at the Whispering Oaks zombie infection. Graffiti scrawled on the walls of Whispering Oaks’ safehouses hint at the quartet escaping, buying their way into evacuation prior to playing their explosive set, but we never see them. What we hope, however, is that we’ll get to actually play the events that lead up to the Midnight Riders’ escape, possibly in the form of downloadable content. With the chapter-to-chapter events more tightly linked than in the original Left 4 Dead, perhaps Valve is going to give a new group of Survivors a chance to tackle the zombie horde. Left 4 Dead 2’s Versus mode— brilliant though it may be —could benefit from a shorter, Crash Course -length campaign. And we hope that they come armed with new Midnight Riders appropriate melee weapons — bottles, bike chains, pool cues and flying V guitars. The four members have the unique silhouettes that would make them easy to pick out in an infected mob, so they may fit in nicely as new playables. Of course, if they’re just a group of special zombies, that’d be fine too. But we’ll keep an eye on new developments, just in case anything pops up. Midnight Riders [Official Site]

This God of War III Box Art Is Not Final [Cover Story]

It says so right on the recently released, still unofficially finalized box art , meaning your copy of God of War III could very well look different. Placeholder though it may be, it’s both attractive and subtle. Perhaps too subtle. Rarely do we see North American games veering from the standard box art path. But considering Sony’s PlayStation 3 box art preference of focusing on the face—see Killzone 2 and Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time —and the God of War III cover showing up on Amazon.com and Sony’s retailer extranet, it could happen. And if it does, just how far will Sony zoom in for future games? Will The Last Guardian just feature a giant retina? How do you judge this cover, Kotaku readership? Thanks to Veton and Jason for the heads up!

The Blu-ray disc combo release of God of War and God of War II is out… hey, next month! As if you weren’t going to get the hi-def God of War Collection for your PS3 anyway, here’s a new trailer. Is it convincing enough? Lower resolution though it may be, the God of War Collection debut trailer has pretty much everything you’d need to ensure a purchase of the PlayStation 3 game. Namely, two God of War games for a paltry $40 USD. Since I *might* have skipped God of War II, it’s an ideal purchase for yours truly. But you? Judge the following trailer to see if this is what you’re looking for. First Look at the God of War Collection Trailer! [PlayStation.blog]

Users Report Fallout 3: Game Of The Year Edition Save Snafu [Caveat Emptor]

Bethesda Softwork’s recently released “Game of the Year” edition of post-apocalyptic adventure Fallout 3 may have a little problem. Some owners of the Fallout 3: GOTY say the game won’t recognize their hard-earned game saves from the original Fallout 3. According to reports from Kotaku tipsters affected by the save and posters on Bethsoft’s official Fallout 3 forums, the problem appears to be limited to folks in Canada (with one from Sweden) who have the PlayStation 3 version of the re-release. Limited though it may appear to be, the inability to play with characters cultivated over dozens or hundreds of hours in the complete Fallout 3 package is understandably frustrating. Fortunately, Bethesda Software appears to be investigating the issue. “Wanted to let you know I’ve been working with folks here at the office to investigate the issues with GOTY in Canada,” assures Bethesda’s Sr. Community Manager. “When I have more details to share, I’ll let you know. Stay tuned.” So, buyer beware, especially if you’re from America’s hat and have invested heavily in the original version of Fallout 3. Kotaku readers, who’s having similar issues? Who’s getting along in the wastelands without issue? Let us know in the comments. Thanks to Wolfsong, Evan and everyone else for the tips. GOTY saves not working.
