In January, Harmonix launched the tools needed for artists to publish their songs on the Rock Band Network . Today, the Rock Band Network Store opens to the public, with more than 100 new songs for fans to purchase and play. The Rock Band Network Store is now online, with new track from artists ranging from 3 Inches of Blood to Zack Wilson now available for download. New tracks will be debuting on the Xbox 360 on a regular basis, with 30 days of exclusivity. A subset of standout tracks from the Xbox 360 will be made available to those playing on the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii, which answers a question Totilo had when he previewed the service back in August . “The response to and interest in the Rock Band Network has been even greater than we originally expected,” said Alex Rigopulos, CEO and co-founder of Harmonix Music Systems. “We’re very excited about the number of bands and labels who have geared up to participate in the Rock Band Network, as well as the number of enthusiasts who have signed up to participate in the Peer Review and Playtest processes.” Check out Totilo’s article for a good overview of the process involved in getting your music onto the Rock Band Network Music Store. The Rock Band Network’s Very Naughty Words [Nsfw]

January 20, 2010 by admin

The Rock Band Network jumps into beta, with a comprehensive guide to offensive content featuring a list of “very naughty words ,” including “Anusdrill,” “Paedophile,” and “God.” Be warned – this post is extremely NSFW. The offensive content guidelines at Creators.Rockband.com is quite an interesting read, giving examples of what words and references would give a song an M rating, which would keep it off the service, or a T rating, which is appropriate for release. The page begins by stressing that these are guidelines that can be stretched, depending on the circumstances, giving the example of offensive language being more tolerable in a heavy metal song than an easy listening tune. Here are song characteristics that would warrant an M rating. Any song that meets these criteria would not be allowed on the service. * Frequent use of common swears or strong language (usually in conjunction with other strong content or subject matter): bitch, bastard, ass, tits, etc. * Use of strong common swears: fuck, shit, cunt, etc. * Explicit or frequent reference to sexual acts/anatomy: “giving head,” “blow job,” “anal,” “pussy,” etc. * Frequent reference to use of illegal drugs: cocaine, heroin, other forms of extreme substance abuse. * Direct or explicit reference to extreme violent physical and/or sexual acts: murder, rape, serial killings, mutilation, etc. Now let’s take a look at criteria that would qualify a song for a T rating, compared to what would be appropriate for the Rock Band Network. The following language and subject matter will flag content for a “T” rating: * Infrequent use of common swears: “ass,” “crap,” “damn,” “bitch,” (occasionally edited, based on context), “bastard,” and so on. * Direct and infrequent reference to sexual acts: “masturbate,” “jerk off,” “going down,” etc. * Allusions, masked or otherwise, to sexual acts: masturbation, oral sex, etc. * Infrequent references to illegal drugs/drug use, alcohol, smoking, and/or substance abuse. * Allusions, masked or otherwise, to physical violence: war, suicide, bombings, etc. The following language and subject matter is OK for RBN: * Infrequent use of minor swears and other questionable language: “darn,” “hell,” etc. * Masked allusions to physical intimacy: For example, the Black Crowes’ song “Hard to Handle,” (“…baby let me light your candle…”). * Direct reference, masked allusion, or threat of mild violence: For example: “Gimme Three Steps,” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Skullcrusher Mountain” by Jonathan Coulton, “I Fought the Law” by The Clash. Once these guidelines are laid out, the page goes on to give specific examples of exceptions. Take the phrase “god damn.” In Weezer’s “El Scorcho” they left it in, as it only appears once. In Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race,” the fact that the phrase appears multiple times and there was backlash to the inclusion of it in “El Scorcho” cause Harmonix to censor it. The guidelines come to a close with a link to a list of very naughty words. In context, it seems to suggest that these are words that should be avoided. We’ve reprinted the list here in its entirety, so read ahead at your own risk. You might be offended, or you might learn something. Anusdrill? Sexual/Explicit/Violent Blowjob Bugger Cum Dildo Felch Feltch Fisting Fuck Fucker Handjob Horny Jackoff Jerkoff Jizz Motherfucker Offscum Poontang Rape Shag Sodding Sodomite Spaghetti Cormorant Spank Sperm Spunk Wank Substance Beer Booze Chronic Cocaine Crack Heroin Shroom Smoker Smack Weed Whiskey Wine Bodily Anus Anusdrill Arsepuss Ballbag Bedwetter Boobs Clit Clitoris Cock Cunt Dick Dickwad Flange Foetus Gash Helmet Cheese Minge Mong Muff Myballz Nob Penis Piss Prick Pussy Quim Shit Shlong Tits Twat Twunt Vadge Racial/Offensive Chink Coon Dago Deigo Dictator Fag Faggot Fascist Franco Gay Hitler Kike Nazi Nigga Nigger Paki Poof Queer Spastic Spik Spick Suck Wog Wop Yid Religious God Judas Language/other Arse Ass Bastard Biatch Beotch Bitch Bloody Bullock Bollocks Bollox Crap Drop Birth Monstrosity Paedophile Paederast Pimp Pimpleface Prostitute Rosette Sucker Slag Slut Suck Whore Most of these make sense, but “God?” How is “God” a very naughty word? We’ll be following up with Harmonix to see how a word like God made it on to the very naughty words list. Creators.RockBand.Com Offensive Content Docs [Official Site]

MTV: Rock Band Network To Be Fully Launched In Early 2010 [Rock Band]

When last we covered details of MTV Games and Harmonix’s ambitious Rock Band Network, we reported that the service would go live in November. It’s not there yet. Today, MTV provided Kotaku an update. The Rock Band Network is a service that allows people to turn listenable music into music that is playable in Rock Band, empowering any musician or fan with the proper rights to expand the Rock Band music library and make some money off sales to gamers of the songs they work on. The Network is currently in closed beta. The November launch of the service on the Xbox 360 that was suggested by Harmonix to Kotaku this past summer isn’t happening. An MTV Games spokesperson broke down the current roll-out plan: “We’re working hard to get the Rock Band Network open public beta release of tools up before the end of the year, with our RBN storefront launching in early 2010. Exact dates still TBD. The tools necessary for bands to start authoring and prepare their content for review are already live on Creators.rockband.com/tools/download . The open beta launch will add access to the currently private website where all of the RBN community activity and peer reviewing of tracks will take place. People who join the Rock Band Network (bands, fans or otherwise) will be able to play and preview any song before it hits the store, so they should stay tuned for the official launch.” So the closed beta continues and it sounds like it will open up to the rest of the public by New Year’s. If you want to buy the songs people are coding, however, you’ll need to wait until 2010. The RBN is planned for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Originally, the 360 version was supposed to launch first. There was no word today about whether that is still the plan. [ PIC ]

Conchords’ Label Confirms Rock Band DLC [Updated] [Rock Band]

Sub Pop Records, the label for the music/comedy duo Flight of the Conchords , confirmed the act’s Emmy Night red carpet claim that three of their tracks were coming to Rock Band , Team Teabag reports. The three tracks were not specified, but two will come from the band’s eponymous debut album, joined by one song from the upcoming “I Told You I Was Freaky.” Sub Pop couldn’t say if they would be released as a track pack or individually. Team Teabag also reported that they’re shooting for an Oct. 20 release, concurrent with the new album and, interestingly, that they’re supposed to go out via the new Rock Band Network . The last we’d heard is that Rock Band Network was scheduled for a November release. I’ve emailed a contact at Harmonix to see if they can shed any light on this, and on Rock Band Network, from their end. Update: My contact says, without specifically confirming any Flight of the Conchords DLC: “I can clarify that the tracks in the Rock Band Network store will not be available for purchase in October, though the submission and vetting processes should be well underway by that point. The closed beta of the Rock Band Network is going really well and we’re excited to open up the process in the coming weeks.” For more info, visit the network’s site.
