Hey Capcom, Why $40 For Super Street Fighter IV? [Capcom]

Super Street Fighter IV is $40. Seems steep for an update to a game that came out only twelve months ago. Let’s give Capcom a chance to try and explain. Speaking with Gamasutra, Capcom’s Christian Svensson has said that while it wasn’t easy settling on a price point (or even a means of delivering the updated characters), a decision had to be made based on the game’s userbase and and simple economics. “It’s $40″, he said. “We had two choices, and the economics didn’t work out on one… No matter what, we were fracturing the userbase, and we had to start from scratch. There was no way to just sort of do an update on the DLC, and if we’d done what we did Lost Planet Colonies — I don’t know if you’ll recall — basically it had everything had the first game had and a ton more.” “And we did that as our Platinum package. The problem is that it gets a new title ID, which means no cross-play with the original consumers. And the other part is designing the game around, figuring out who has which package, even if you could do that. So, we knew we had to go from scratch. A Platinum [version] wasn’t really an option no matter what we did.” “The other part of this is frankly we were putting in so much new content, we thought that a platinum play wasn’t the right play anyway. So, going $10 above Platinum/Greatest Hits pricing was sort of a nice compromise. And we haven’t announced it, but for those who have purchased and played Street Fighter IV on the system that they play this on, there will be a nifty little special set of things that those people will have the option of enjoying that others won’t.” Seems to skirt around the issue somewhat. It’s a good deal being $10 over platinum pricing for new consumers, yeah, but that “special set of things” had want to be pretty damn special for existing owners to spend $90 in one year on Street Fighter IV. Careful, Capcom: Christian Svensson Speaks [Gamasutra]

What Your $60 Really Buys [Bidness]

Seven dollars of a $60 video game purchase covers expenses for games never even sold. That’s according to a breakdown of retail game cost by an on-demand games service. OnLive, of Palo Alto, Calif., says that $7 covers, on average, “returns.” That’s the cost associated with returning unsold inventory – essentially, sales that don’t meet expectations. By this analysis it is equivalent to the royalty paid to the platform holder – Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony. By far the largest portion is to the publisher, nearly half of it. As it should be. But 25 percent of a game’s cost is the profit to the seller. That is a very nice margin, and it – plus the fudge factor on the returns, hint at how discounts on some new games can be justified even at release. Anatomy of a $60 Video Game [Los Angeles Times]

Dead Space Extraction, Planet Cracker Coming To XBLA, PSN? [Rumor]

Visceral Games’ Dead Space 2 may not be the next game you play in the sci-fi franchise. Recent surveys point to an Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network port of Wii misfire Dead Space Extraction and something brand new, Planet Cracker. One survey’s description of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 port of Dead Space Extraction indicates that any planned port of the game would feature the same on-rails “guided first-person experience” gameplay, pitched as an “interactive horror experience” in “full HD.” A tentative price of $15 USD was mentioned in the survey forwarded to Kotaku. Another title, known as Planet Cracker, was potentially more interesting. Described as a “resource strategy game where players will manage a CEC Mining operation,” Planet Cracker focuses players on attempting to “maximize their daily profit” and “defending their hard-won ore from Space Pirates.” Sounds like Ore Tycoon aboard the USG Ishimura. Planet Cracker was billed in the survey as an extension to the story of Dead Space 2 and could yield “in-game rewards” for the retail version of the sequel, similar to the Fable II Pub Games that preceded Lionhead’s role-playing game and netted players in-game gold. Both Dead Space Extraction HD and Planet Cracker were listed a possible incentives for Dead Space 2 that could be unlocked to those who pre-purchased the game. While the survey appears legitimate, EA’s plans may change, so we’re labeling this information as rumor until any official announcements are made. We’ve contacted Electronic Arts to get clarification but have not yet heard back.
