My Trash-80 Powered Gaming Roots [Pic Or It Didn't Happen]

It’s easy to post pictures of your current gaming rig , your oodles of games, to brag about achievements and trophies, but none of that means a thing. True gamers have roots and I want to see them. What do I mean? Take for instance this picture, circa 1987, of my bedroom. Note the distinct lack of tidiness or, for that matter consoles. That’s right my first taste of gaming may have come wrapped in faux wood paneling at the hands of the Atari 2600, but what made me a gamer for life was the time spent in my bedroom with this sweet-ass TRS-80 COCO. I spent my weekends and nights hanging out on BBSes, playing Armored Patrol, searching through stacks of floppies for my bootleg copy of Joust and taking turns texting through Zork with my older brother Drew. Sure, I had a kick-ass sunglass collection, a wall packed with illustrations copied out of D&D books and a letter jacket in “sports health”. But what really made me a die hard geek was the COCO and it’s liquid-fast 300 baud modem. Time to put up or shut up. Let’s see your roots.

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow – Belmont’s Inferno [Screens]

This new batch of screenshots, concept art, and enemy renders for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow are lovely and all, but I can’t help but think the game could use a tie-in with a revered work of religious fiction. Now I am not calling Lords of Shadow a Dante’s Inferno clone, but protagonist Gabriel Belmont is a member of an elite group of holy knights, and a cross is a major part of his arsenal. He even has a wife named Marie who was murdered by a supernatural entity and is trapped for eternity in spirit form, guiding Gabriel on his quest to do bad things to bad things. I bet if we were to check issues of Reader’s Digest from say, the early 1300’s, we might find a short story from one D. Alighieri that’s a close match for the Lords of Shadow plot, perhaps with an editor’s note: needs more circles.

To: Luke From: Owen I don’t know when he got it, but my packrat brother Fletch stole a firetruck red easy chair recliner from the downstairs of our old home and, as far as I know, hasn’t gotten it reupholstered. If it’s the same one I remember, that thing was like sitting on the lap of a mangy Santa Claus. For some reason Fletch discovered that above, on a newspaper wedged into the innards of the recliner. This paper is from 1974. So, not only are we talking about a porta-potty before there were porta-pottys as we know them, it was also “home made.” And going for $90 in 1974, which adjusted for inflation is probably $250 now. This must have been one hell of a crapper.
