Nominated for awards in Art and Technical Excellence for obvious reasons in the 12th Annual Independent Games Festival, Playdead’s stunning black and white puzzle platformer Limbo is heading to Xbox Live Arcade this summer. Limbo is the story of a young boy braving a bleak and mysterious world in order to determine the fate of his sister. The art is purely black and white, with the main character and platforming elements silhouetted against beautiful greyscale backdrops. Today Playdead announces a worldwide release for the game on consoles this year, with an exclusive summer launch on Xbox Live Arcade. Limbo will be playable at the IGF Pavilion during the 2010 Game Developers Conference next weekend. You can learn about the game at its official site, which includes a video teaser that’s even more impressive than these screens. Be sure to stay tuned to our Road to IGF coverage for more on Playdead’s Limbo.

"Piece Walker" Meaning Revealed [Revealed]

The meaning behind Konami’s ” Piece Walker ” teaser from last month was revealed today. And it’s not a portal, nor a demo or a new project. It’s just some jigsaw puzzle. Well, the puzzle hasn’t launched just yet, but that’s what it’ll be, likely a Flash game. It gets going at 3 p.m. Thursday (Japan time, which is 10 p.m. U.S. Pacific time Wednesday). There seems to be some sort of head-to-head component to the puzzle too, like a race to solve it first. Metal Gear Solid “Piece” Walker Web Site [Konami via Metal Gear Scholar ]

Kurulin Fusion Or A Ham Sandwich? [Psn]

MTO USA ’s PSP puzzler Kurulin Fusion combines “futuristic graphics” with a musical score directed by Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu , and it’s available later today on the PlayStation Network. MTO USA’s marketing pitch? “Have fun. Don’t eat.” Being a big Nobuo Uematsu fan myself, MTO USA doesn’t really have to market a $4.99 downloadable PSP puzzle game featuring his work in my direction. Were I not a fan, however, MTO USA marketing guy Scott Pelland would have had me at “ham sandwich.” Pelland hypes up Kurulin Fusion in a post on the official PlayStation blog. Did I mention that the game is now available for a mere $4.99? Let’s put that into perspective. That’s less than the cost of a ham sandwich here in Seattle. So, the question really is this; would you rather play an engaging game with world-class, imaginative music and endless replay value…or have a sandwich? I vote GAME, and I’ve been a huge freaking sandwich fan for years – but I’d rather have fun than be fat. So that’s our marketing message: Have fun. Don’t eat. He makes a good point. I’d discuss the game’s mechanics, it’s earlier incarnation filled with cute doggies, and the Johann Sebastian Bach connection, but Pelland does it all so much better. Read all about Kurulin Fusion at the link below. Kurulin Fusion for PSP Available Today on PSN [PlayStation Blog]

ONEBIGGAME CONFIRMS FULL ARTIST LINE-UP IN NOT-FOR PROFIT MUSIC PUZZLE GAME CHIME, CREATED BY ZOË MODE

OneBigGame’s First Title Available this Winter on Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360

San Francisco, Calif. – Dec. 3, 2009 – OneBigGame, a non-profit publisher of videogames, has confirmed the final music artist line-up for its recently announced puzzle music game Chime on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

Tracks from Moby, Paul Hartnoll of Orbital, Fred Deakin of Lemon Jelly, Philip Glass and Markus Schulz are confirmed for the unique block puzzle game that sees players re-construct existing songs from these famous artists by placing irregular shaped blocks on a sequencer-style playing field.

A creative twist on both music and block puzzle games, Chime tasks players with covering the playing field with irregular shapes, each connected to a sound effect from the background music track, to form rectangular blocks, called quads. Chime’s innovative game mechanics enables players to create a unique remix of each song every time they play a level as the building of larger quads unlock more elements of the underlying song. Working their way to 100 percent coverage of the grid, players will unlock the song in full.

All artists have donated their tracks pro bono to the game, which sees all net proceeds go to charity.

“We are very excited to work with such a diverse line-up of musicians and tracks and are extremely grateful to these artists for their pro bono contributions,” said Martin de Ronde, director, OneBigGame. “Having world-class acts linked to Chime raises its profile even further, and is a great example of the collaborative nature of the entire OneBigGame charity initiative.”

Contributions from the artists were also largely made possible thanks to the effort of Nimrod Productions’ music supervisor and composer Marc Canham and his associate Artie Fufkin, who reached out in their network of music labels, publishers and artists to sign up artists for the game.

OneBigGame has more than 15 games currently in development from various established developers to raise funds for its children’s charities. Zoë Mode is the first in a series of developers and designers who have been working on games for the charity publisher.

“We’re thrilled that these great artists have donated their music to Chime and shown such enthusiasm for the game and the OneBigGame project,” said Ciaran Walsh, Audio Director at Zoë Mode. “We’ve worked hard to do justice to their music, turning each track into a unique level with musical depth and great gameplay.”

Chime will be available this winter on Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360.

Chime’s full artist line-up and track list:
Philip Glass – Brazil
Markus Schulz – Spilled Cranberries
Moby – Ooh Yeah
Paul Hartnoll (Orbital) – For Silence
Fred Deakin (Lemon Jelly) – Disco Ghosts

Myst-ic Adventures Coming to GOG.com

December 3, 2009 by gamespress

The Myst series, one of the best-selling PC-gaming series of all time, is making a comeback on the DRM-free distribution platform.

Warsaw, Poland – December 3, 2009. GOG.com (http://www.gog.com), the digital download service that satisfies the nostalgic desire for classic PC games, has secured another deal to revive acclaimed titles from PC-gaming history. The agreement with development studio, Cyan Worlds, will bring acclaimed titles from the Myst series to the GOG.com catalogue. With this announcement, the site’s collection of Good Old Games grows even bigger with the additions of Myst Masterpiece; Riven, the sequel to Myst; and Manhole – all DRM-free and $5.99 each.

Myst is a first-person graphic adventure game praised by gamers and by critics for its engaging story, incredible atmosphere and a general experience that resembles a work of art as much as a video game. All those aspects made the game a best-selling PC title throughout the 1990s. The player is put in the role of a stranger who gets magically transported to a mysterious island described in a book. To complete the game, the player must explore the seemingly deserted Myst Island and solve a wide range of challenging puzzles. Most fans of the series would agree with GamePro’s assessment – “Don’t Myst out.”

“Keeping the Myst series alive is incredibly satisfying,” said Rand Miller, co-founder of Cyan. “GOG.com allows us to keep the ages of Myst accessible for our fans, and in addition make them available to a whole new generation of gamers.”

“GOG.com was created to bring back such games as the Myst series,” said Adam Oldakowski, Managing Director of GOG.com. “If you call yourself a PC gamer you’ve surely heard about those games, and now, thanks to Cyan Worlds and GOG.com everyone can revisit those true classics.”

The first part of the series, Myst Masterpiece, is already available for only $5.99, while Riven and Manhole will be available soon for the same price.

About Cyan Worlds
Cyan Worlds, Inc., located in Spokane, Washington, is best known for MYST® and RivenTM, which received numerous awards, critical acclaim and broad popularity. Cyan has been designing and building immersive, interactive worlds since 1987. For more information on Cyan Worlds please go to our website at http://cyanworlds.com
