Someone’s Gonna Make That Mortal Kombat Movie, Even If They Have To Sue [Lawsuit]

A Hollywood production company has filed suit against Warner Bros., claiming the media giant has frozen it out of developing a Mortal Kombat movie after buying up the franchise in last year’s sell off of Midway. Hollywood news site The Wrap reports that Threshold Entertainment filed the suit on Tuesday in Los Angeles. It was the original development partner with Midway of the 1995 film adaptation of Mortal Kombat, and in 2006 signed a contract with Midway to develop another film. While Midway went bankrupt and Warner successfully bid on its properties, Threshold says federal bankruptcy proceedings upheld the agreements it had signed with Midway, passing them on to Warner. Last month word surfaced that Warner was interested in doing a reboot of the 1995 movie, having already hired a screenwriter to the project. Meantime, Threshold said Warner had avoided communications with them. So last month’s news was probably the final straw. ‘Mortal Kombat’ Thrown Into Legal Match [The Wrap]

Are they being moved to the Game Room? Midway Games’ Xbox Live Arcade portfolio has, as if by magic, mysteriously disappeared. Gone are Mortal Kombat 3, Defender, Gauntlet, Paperboy and Smash TV. Are they being held back for the release of Game Room – the virtual Xbox Live arcade space – this March? Or have they fallen foul of legal muddy waters, as they belong to a company that no longer exists? Read more…

News: Game Room denied mature games

Service suitable for 10 year-olds. Mature games may be prohibited on Microsoft’s new online PC and Xbox 360 platform, Game Room. To avoid laboriously rating hundreds of retro titles individually, MS has decided to classify Game Room itself. The ESRB has deemed the service suitable for anyone aged 10 or over, and any game falling within those perameters can be sold at publisher’s and platform holder’s leisure. The problem surrounds games rated for older audiences, such as Mortal Kombat, Metal Slug and Street Fighter. “Games available for download within Game Room will carry either E or E10+ ratings. We currently have no plans to feature titles of those [higher Teen and Mature] ratings,” an MS spokesperson told GamerBytes. We’re chasing this up with Microsoft. Read more…

According to a report on Bloody Disgusting, Warner Bros. Studios is looking to start production on a reboot of 1995 film Mortal Kombat . Having bought the rights to the franchise when it picked up Midway last year , BD say that Warner is looking to get Oren Uziel to write up a script for the project, Uziel’s Shimmer Lake having made the 2009 “Black List”, a collection of the best scripts floating around Hollywood that are yet to enter into production. Good to see Warner is as intent on pissing money down the toilet as Mortal Kombat’s previous owners were. Cameron Diaz Was (Almost) In Mortal Kombat [Hollywood]

Most of the time, our news is fresh. It has that “new news” smell. But sometimes, our news is old. Like a fine wine. Like this vintage clip from a special on Cameron Diaz with some surprisingly game-related info. Did you know Diaz had been cast as Sonya in the first Mortal Kombat movie? And only pulled out because she broke her hand having karate lessons? We didn’t. Imagine that…one of the most beautiful and successful actresses of our generation, and she was one broken hand from throwing it all away… [ Ed Boon @ Twitter , thanks Frank!]

Out.com, the online presence of the gay lifestyle magazine Out, has selected its “Gayest Video Games.” This is like pouring jet fuel on a thermite-and-napalm salad, but these are games that trip their gaydar, not ones straight people call “gay.” ” Super Mario Bros. : Cleaning pipes and taking names,” goes the first entry. We can see where this is headed. “Two bare-chested dudes on a mission neither can accomplish without the other,” is the description for Contra. Duke Nukem is a “muscled Chelsea queen.” Mortal Kombat is “Likely the first and most tranny-relevant video game.” And the “hands-down gayest video game of all time,” oughta set a few people off. Johnny Cage Explains: Mortal Kombat Is Not A Tournament [Humor]

Participating in a Mortal Kombat fight to the death is scary enough as it is, but Johnny Cage’s explanation of how a tournament works, apparently lost on Shang Tsung, is a good public service announcement. That is, if you plan on holding your own Mortal Kombat contest any time soon and plan on letting a four-armed beast with an IQ like Goro’s run the logistics for you. It’ll all make sense when you watch College Humor’s new video. Mortal Kombat Is Not A Tournament [College Humor]

The Mortal Kombat That Should Have Been [Midway]

Ex-Midway artist Vincent Proce went back to the drawing board for a pitched, but ultimately rejected visual reboot of the developer’s venerable Mortal Kombat franchise, posting the results of that back-to-basics design plan on his personal blog. Proce, who contributed to Midway’s final fighting game ( Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe ) before being snapped up by Warner Bros, wrote that the re-imagining of the MK franchise proposed “mixing modern muti-player and dismemberment game design with the original fighting mechanic.” The artist’s take on four Mortal Kombat mainstays—Raiden, Kano, Scorpion and Sonya Blade—are dramatic, gritty and, for the most part, a welcome change. Proce describes his Scorpion as “a wraith wearing the yellow blood of the demon” that resurrected him, his Kano as “half Japanese half US military bad ass.” His Sonya, which will likely draw the most criticism, was redesigned as “the daughter of a Texas Ranger who’s sex appeal weakens her opponents while her Special Forces training kicks their asses.” Finally, his Raiden pitch portrays “a god [whose] feet rarely touch the ground.” We’re not sure what direction the Mortal Kombat team is taking the series at its new home, but I’m personally hoping it’s more along these lines—a darker, more dramatic, less comic book-like treatment with a pared down cast—than what we got with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. I enjoyed that game as much as the next guy, but I like my MK with a little less Wonder Woman. Here are the never before seen Mortal Kombat characters… [Vincent Proce Art Blog via GameSetWatch / SRK Forums ]
