Not much in the way of games this week in the PAL PlayStation Store, but those looking for more stuff to do in games they already own, they’re being looked after. There are add-ons for nine games, ranging from the usual suspects (Rock Band, Fallout 3) to Borderlands to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 to Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. There is one game available, but since it’s Madden Arcade, its allure for the European market won’t be quite what it is in the US. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Hooks Up Cable [Clips]

After a good month of watching local channels, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 finally upgrades to Cable. The son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor, raised by Cyclops and Jean Grey in the far future, Cable would be one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel Universe if they hadn’t dialed his powers way down in order to make sure he wasn’t. Cable joins the psychotic Carnage and psymexy Psylocke as three of the five new characters slated for downloadable content for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. And aww, he’s fighting bad guys with his mommy. That’s so sweet.

Halo 3: ODST Beats Out Madden, Mario & Marvel To Win September [Npd]

The PlayStation 3 may have killed it in the hardware contest last month, but Xbox 360 software reigned supreme this September, thanks to Bungie’s Halo 3: ODST. The game dropped more than 1.5 million copies in its debut month. That makes Halo 3: ODST the bestselling game in the United States by a wide margin, outselling its nearest competitor, Wii Sports Resort, by more than a million copies. It’s not quite as impressive as the launch of Halo 3, which turned in 3.3 million copies when it launched, but clearly enough for the win. ODST had some stiff competition in September, with new top ten software appearances from games like Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, the only portable game to chart, Madden NFL 10 and The Beatles: Rock Band. Superhero games also scored big, with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum moving more than 200,000 copies each on the Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively. Here’s how September’s game sales worked out, by the numbers. 01. Halo 3: ODST (Xbox 360) – 1,520,000 02. Wii Sports Resort (Wii) – 442,900 03. Madden NFL 10 (Xbox 360) – 298,600 04. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS) – 258,100 05. The Beatles: Rock Band (Xbox 360) – 254,000 06. Madden NFL 10 (PS3) – 246,500 07. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (Xbox 360) – 236,000 08. Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3) – 212,500 09. Guitar Hero 5 (Xbox 360) – 210,800 10. The Beatles: Rock Band (Wii) – 208,600 Game purchases for the month amounted to $649.32 million, a five percent increase over the previous September. We’re sure the video game industry has already sent a thank you card to Bungie for the uncommon boost. Here’s NPD analyst Anita Frazier’s take on the whole thing. “Halo 3 certainly impacted the industry two years ago (Sep’07) when it was launched, and this year, Halo 3: ODST realized impressive sales making it the 6th best-selling SKU launch of all time. Five of the top 10 software items for the month were on the Xbox 360 platform.” “We know all eyes are going to be on the Rock Band and Guitar Hero sales since the music/dance genre has been so closely followed by many this year. Both titles captured a spot in the top 10 for the month and at the item level, across all platforms, The Beatles: Rock Band came in third behind Halo 3: ODST and Madden NFL 10 while Guitar Hero 5 came in fourth. The Beatles: Rock Band achieved this level of success with an average retail price premium of 130% to the average retail price for software overall. The sales of Rock Band and Guitar Hero led the music/dance genre to a 72% dollar sales increase over September 2008.” “Madden NFL 10 made up some ground this month. Although when launched in August the game sold 19% fewer units than its predecessor a year prior, with a second month of sales in, that deficit has been reduced to 13%, which bodes very well for the title through the holiday season.”

Carnage Strikes Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 [Activision]

October 9, 2009 by admin

Cletus Kasady, AKA Carnage, is making his way to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 , and he’s much more than another Spider-Man clone. Carnage is what happened when comic book writers looked at one of Spider-Man’s most powerful foes, Venom, and decided he just wasn’t dangerous enough. Marvel describes Carnage as a total psychopath with no sense of honor, where Venom is a slight psychopath with a fair to middling’ sense of honor. Over at the official Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 web page , lead animator Adam Olshan assuages players concerns that Carnage winds up just another version of Spider-Man or Venom. We used the word “vicious” a lot when talking about how he should look. “Crazy” too, because of the background of who he is and what he is. I worked mostly on his basic melee combat. That’s when we really pay attention to how we can differentiate that character. Spider-Man needs to be agile & springy. Venom was more of a bruiser, like a huge jungle cat who attacks with lethal clawed swipes. For Carnage, we wanted him to feel as quick as Spider-Man, but as dangerous as Venom (or worse). We ended up with a very “slashy” character. Carnage is like a lunatic knife fighter: cutting people up quickly and messily, without much concern for how he looks doing it. As of right now, all we know is that Carnage is coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 eventually. He sounds interesting, but Carnage remains one of my least favorite Spider-Man characters of all time, so unless they put him in a pack with someone more interesting, I probably won’t be biting this time around.

Review: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

Civil bore. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 isn’t vastly different to the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which was pretty similar to X-Men Legends 2, which owed more than a little to X-Men Legends. Trouble is, X-Men Legends came out in 2004, so the fact that the series has only shown incremental signs of evolution is cause for concern. As before, a buffet of superheroes is spread out before you, all ready to mash their way through level after level of Diablo-style action-RPG gameplay at your command. You choose a squad of four – swapping them out on the fly, should you wish – and access their superpowers through the face buttons modified by the right trigger. Experience is earned for every enemy dispatched, and each level-up grants you the opportunity to enhance one or more of your abilities. So far, so familiar, but this sequel does have a few new(ish) tricks up its sleeve. The biggest is the addition of Fusion attacks. These are earned by filling up a meter with normal melee and power attacks, and allow you to combine the talents of two of your heroes for one extra-powerful attack. There are three basic types, and which one you get depends on who you team up with. Targeted Fusions allow you to direct a strike at one specific enemy – ideal for bosses. Guided Fusions are ones you can steer around, great for mopping up scattered enemies. Clearing Fusions are wide-area attacks that come in handy should you get crowded. Each can be modified with a spot of button-bashing, to make them more effective. Read more…
