Portal 2 Adds Multiplayer Co-op, New & Familiar Characters [Valve]

Officially released details on Valve’s sequel to Portal were scant. Fortunately, retailer GameStop comes through with some major details, including the addition of a two-player cooperative campaign mode and all-new characters. GameStop ’s description of the PC and Xbox 360 game indicates that Portal 2 is due later this year—the online retailer lists an October 26 release date—bringing with a cast of “dynamic new characters” and “never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs.” And yes, as hinted at earlier, players will be reunited with GLaDOS. The only details on Portal 2’s multiplayer mode from GameStop are that it will feature its own unique story-driven campaign. The “new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals,” requiring players “to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.” Here’s the full product description. Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007’s Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively. Triumphant.

After numerous lengthy delays, the PlayStation 3 version of Dragon Age: Origins’ Return to Ostagar downloadable content has passed certification, with a release scheduled for two weeks from tomorrow. Return to Ostagar was originally slated for release during the holiday season for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, but constant delays pushed the release date into January. It was released for the Xbox 360 in early January , only to be withdrawn due to general bugginess . On January 29th BioWare released the downloadable content once again , though only for the PC and 360. Now an official post on the BioWare forums has announced that the new content has finally passed PlayStation 3 certification, and will be hitting the PlayStation Network on March 11th, giving players four days to blaze through Ostagar before the Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening expansion is released. It’s still a relatively long wait, but at least you’ll be busy for a while once it drops. Return to Ostagar PS3 Release Date Confirmed! March 11, 2010 [BioWare Forums - Thanks Lisa!]

Mario Galaxy 2 & Metroid Coming "Mid Year" [Nintendo]

All week long, Nintendo will be holding media conferences around the world, outlining some of the company’s plans for 2010. The first of these went down in Australia today, and Kotaku Australia was there. The biggest news coming out of the event was that Nintendo’s two biggest “core” releases of the year – Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M – will be out a lot sooner than we thought. While everyone had been expecting both to ship towards the holiday season, Nintendo Australia said both games would be arriving “mid year”, suggesting a summer (well, northern summer, Australian winter) release for both. Exact details are expected to come from the North American summit tomorrow, which we’ll be attending, so check back in then for more information. In other news coming out of the event, the black Wii will go on sale in Australia on March 11, while the DSi XL will be released on April 15. Kotaku ‘Shop Contest: Conversation Hearts Edition [Photoshop]

Happy Valentine’s Day, dear readers. We have a sweet ‘Shop Contest candidate for you – dear old NECCO Conversation Hearts, a staple of the holiday which I’m sure you’ll pervert with your own crude sayings. At least, that’s the intent. NECCO, the maker of these things, says it threw out all of the Sweethearts sayings and took submissions from the public for this year’s line of candy. Well, nobody asked us! Probably for good reason. That’s where you ‘Shoppers come in. Let’s keep this as game related as possible (I’m really hoping “Guided First-Person Experience” can fit on one of these), but as you can see in this gathering of Sweethearts, there are at least eight blank ones for you to draw on and a ton more to emboss. Pics, words, go to town. Except for you, Mr. Fap Fap. Source Image: Valentine’s Sweethearts [via Stock.xchng ] Post your submissions in the comments. Remember, folks, this is a great way to get approved as a Kotaku commenter if you aren’t already. I and the starred commenters (hint hint) will promote as many as I can periodically, and next week post a gallery of the 20 or so best.
