Greetings, people who have interests that are not solely centered on video games. Thanks for sticking with us during our previous 32 video game related posts. Here’s that Kotaku Off Topic opportunity you’ve been waiting for. I was thinking about Doogie Howser, M.D. earlier today, a show that I may have religiously watched from pilot to finale, just one of many television programs from the 70s, 80s and 90s that I wasted valuable untamed youth time on. The Cosby Show, What’s Happening!!, Alice, Soap, One Day At A Time, Knight Rider, Voltron, Robotech, Transformers, The A-Team… Manimal… these are just some of the shows that absorbed weeks, if not months of my life. Now I watch Lost. And that’s it. The occasional HBO show (True Blood, The Wire, Sopranos), but I’ve made the switch to the internet. Feels good. Oh, so do these conversation starters. Penguin Classics team up with (RED) for typographic covers – Maybe the best thing to come out of the (RED) campaign? News: Halo Wars joins Xbox Live GOD line-up

But SFIV limited to US and Asia. Microsoft has made Halo Wars available through the Games on Demand bit of Xbox Live Marketplace. You can grab it for £19.99 either via your Xbox 360 or through the web interface. Alternatively you could pick it up for 20 quid in shops, where it joined the Xbox 360 Classics collection last week. Pick them up for 20 quid a pop. Microsoft has made two new additions to the Classics collection of Xbox 360 software. First up is Fable II, Lionhead’s hit role-playing game. The Classics edition comes complete with Knothole Island and See the Future add-ons. Or you can have a go at strategy title Halo Wars and control your very own armies of Spartans and Warthogs. Microsoft To Announce "Xbox Game Room" At CES [Update] [Ces10]

Today’s Microsoft CES keynote is likely to make mention of the arrival of the Xbox Game Room, a retro-themed game space, at least according to a video interview with Microsoft’s Robbie Bach , president of the company’s Entertainment and Devices Division. More specifically, that’s from the quickly pulled video, originally posted on Microsoft’s On10.net and Channel 9 video blogs. In that video, Bach is said to have discussed a “one stop shop for retro games,” according to a tipster who saw the video before it was pulled. If true, that sure sounds a lot like the Atari and Intellivision game-filled arcade populated with Xbox Live Avatars that leaked in a survey late last year. At the time, the names RetroCade, RetroGame, Game Preserve, Game Gallery, Tower of ROM, Tower of Game(s), Classics and Classics LIVE were all competing against what sounds like the final winner, Game Room. Microsoft’s CES keynote is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 PM PST. We’ll be liveblogging the event from the show, so check back to see just how much of a rumor this really is. Thanks to Ian for the heads up! Update: Looks like the video interview wasn’t fully removed. Bach does confirm the Game Room addition to Xbox 360 . “It’s sort of a retro approach. It’s interesting, there’s a generation… who grew up with a set of games like Centipede,” Bach says of Xbox Game Room. “They look almost like casual, fun games today, at the time, they were high-end, edgy games. So Game Room is the idea of bringing that back to the market.” He also describes the Xbox Game Room as “like my daughter going to watch Journey.” Hopefully that actually means Journey the video game will be playable.

George Costanza’s Frogger Record Shattered [High Scores]

The one shining achievement in the life of Seinfeld’s George Costanza is no more, as a Connecticut man shatters the fictional Frogger record previously thought unattainable by real people. In the 1998 Seinfeld episode “The Frogger,” George Costanza tries desperately to save the Frogger machine that holds his greatest achievement – the fictional world record score of 860,630 points. The episode ends with a battery-rigged arcade machine getting smashed in traffic in homage to the classic game, the record of the achievement lost forever. Not that it matters now, as George now holds the second-highest Frogger score of all time. Pat Laffaye of Westport, CT racked up an enormously impressive 896,980 points, beating the fictional character soundly. The score was verified by referee Eric Akeson of arcade record-keepers Twin Galaxies and announced at the stroke of midnight on January 1st. “Even though it was imagined by television writers, Pat has broken one of the most famous scores in pop culture,” Twin Galaxies Division Manager Patrick Scott Patterson said. “Pat’s amazing score will now forever be attached to not only Twin Galaxies history, but pop culture trivia as well.” Pat also holds the world record score for Paperboy and apparently has far too much time on his hands.

So much to see and do this week on the North American version of the PlayStation Store . But what to do first? Download the Gran Turismo 5 Time Trial demo? Final Fantasy VIII? Rubber Soul? Argh! GoG.com Brings Myst Back To The Masses [Classics]

Good Old Games , the DRM-free digital download service for classic PC games, teams up with Cyan Worlds to bring classic adventure game series Myst back into service. Myst is one of those games that brought countless newcomers into the world of PC gaming, with it’s high-quality visuals and challenging puzzles making it one of the earliest hits of the CD-ROM era. Now GoG.com has reached an agreement with developer Cyan Worlds to put the games up for sale once more, starting with Myst Masterpiece, available now for $5.99. “Keeping the Myst series alive is incredibly satisfying,” said Rand Miller, co-founder of Cyan. “GOG.com allows us to keep the ages of Myst accessible for our fans, and in addition make them available to a whole new generation of gamers.” Masterpiece will be followed shortly after by Riven, which weighs in at a 2.2GB, a truly massive game for its time, and Manhole, Rand and Robyn Miller’s earlier adventure game for kids. Over the years I’ve probably purchased Myst in one form or another more than a dozen times. I suppose it’s nice to have another option.
