Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Jack Tretton seems incredibly pleased with Heavy Rain’s reception with PlayStation 3 owners, saying that the newly released game’s pre-sales were “off the charts,” underscoring that there’s no need yet for a PlayStation 4. Tretton tells Fast Company that the next generation of the PlayStation family won’t arrive until there’s a clear need for it. And with the PS3 just now hitting its stride three-plus years in, when the traditional console cycle is past the halfway mark, Tretton says, there’s still plenty of life left in the console. “When somebody can craft the technology that exceeds what we’re able to do on the PS3, but we are still just starting to harness it,” Tretton argues. “I don’t know what the percentage would be, but we’ve clearly just scratched the surface in the PS3. You’re just starting to see games like Little Big Planet, Uncharted 2, and Final Fantasy XIII, that are really taking advantage of the technology. You are going to see more and more value and more and more innovation across the board.” Jack’s also pretty please with the annual “Year of the PS3″ claims. NPD Top 20 Shows How MAG, Bayonetta Fared In January [Only In The U.s.]

Well-read sales analysis enthusiasts are already well aware that some of January’s most anticipated games did not become January’s bestselling games . While some new properties, like THQ’s Darksiders, managed a top ten showing, some settled for the top 20. Gamasutra ’s monthly, more in-depth and less instant analysis of the month’s bestselling games shows that two of January’s bigger names, Sega’s Bayonetta and Sony’s MAG, managed to find a place near the top of the charts, but did not perform well enough for top ten bragging rights. Bayonetta managed to score somewhere above 100,000 sales on the Xbox 360, with the PlayStation 3 version not charting, moving less than 100,000. Whether that’s good or bad is up to Sega and PlatinumGames, but we were hoping for better for the game, given its three weeks worth of sales. MAG managed to outsell Bayonetta with only five days on the market, potentially good news for Zipper Interactive and fans of the PS3 shooter. Not as good as Mass Effect 2, which released the same day in the U.S., but not a bad start. Japan Is Still Big Portable Country [Console Taisen]

In Japan, the PSP and Nintendo DS platforms are still outselling the home console competition. And it’s the bigger versions of each portable platform, the standard PSP-3000 and Nintendo DSi LL, that Japan’s buying more of. Sony’s PlayStation Portable once again tops the charts, thanks to strong sales of God Eater and the three-way split of the Nintendo DS platform. Combined, the DS would have sold some 52,000-plus units, but that’s not how sales tracker Media Create does it. This week’s hardware chart looks a lot like last week’s, but here are the finer details for the week of February 1 to 7.
