Games Meets Books At The Bookseller Digital Conference

December 4, 2009 by gamespress

This week TIGA members attended The Bookseller Digital Conference in London. This year the annual conference focused on the emerging market for e-books as book publishers attempt to adapt to new technology and the changing business landscape.

13 TIGA members attended the event including Mere Mortals, Monumental, Gamerholix, Rebellion, Airplay, Playniac, Attractive Games, Gameware and Zoe Mode with the aim of fostering closer ties with the book world and to look at possible cross industry commercial collaborations.
Speaking after the event Mick Stockton from Mere Mortals stated: “Both markets know we are going to be working together very soon and this event allows games developers to meet the decision makers at a key time in their planning.”

Jason Kingsley from Rebellion added: “The event was a great success, and all of the speakers had something to say that was at least food for thought or at best excellent advice. It was an interesting and thought provoking event that was highly worth-while.”

Elliot Gay from Gamerholix added: “Creating future partnerships is vital and it’s exciting to bring book content into the world of games. This event is the start of great things.”

From the book publishing side Alastair Horne from Cambridge University Press stated:
“The games industry has so much to offer educational publishers. The best games encourage players to develop their skills by constantly challenging them and providing highly motivating rewards – just like effective learning. Many teachers, such as Dawn Hallybone in Redbridge and Derek Robertson at Scotland’s Consolarium, are already using commercial games such as Nintendogs and Rock Band in the classroom, developing their own engaging and effective learning materials around them. I’m sure the next 24 months will see more partnerships between games companies and publishers to develop software that combines the engagement and motivating challenges of the best games with genuine curriculum learning.”
Collaboration between the games industry and the book publishing industry is one of the aims of TIGA’s Creative Industry Switch initiative. To find out more about how to become part of Creative Industry Switch visit www.tiga.org or contact Lorna Evans on lorna.evans@tiga.org.

Sheffield, December 3rd 2009: Games-Masters.com, publisher of the massively multiplayer online games CABAL Online and Perfect World, have today stepped up its action against illegal private servers. It follows recent success against one of the largest Perfect World Private Servers, with the service shut down with the support of the local laws and data centres involved.

Illegal servers, based on the theft of intellectual property, have become a growing menace for game publishers around the world. This is set to result in legal action against the worst offenders, with damages and criminal remedies sought.

The company are hoping that this campaign will not only make the hosts of the private servers aware of the illegality and consequences of their actions but also raise awareness to the thousands who play on these services of the risks involved.

Strategy is Everything – Will your App Catch Fire or Fizzle?

San Francisco – December 4, 2009 – Today, Venturebeat, the leading news source on tech business and venture capital in Silicon Valley and beyond, announces the latest speaker lineup for DiscoveryBeat in downtown San Francisco. This conference promises to share the secrets behind creating and marketing social and mobile apps. Now that the iTunes App Store hosts over 100,000 apps, developers are faced with the struggle of standing out in the crowd. Each application platform transforms at a rapid pace, so developers must create a strategy to avoid being sent to the abyss of undiscovered apps.

“DiscoveryBeat is about whether an application developer sees life or death. Is he or she using the right Jujitsu moves in social media, or isn’t he or she?” said Matt Marshall, Editor-in-Chief at VentureBeat. “DiscoveryBeat will explore the best moves leading to a winning strategy.”

This event has attracted top social networking execs like Vice President Bill Mooney and General Manager Roy Sehgal from Zynga who will talk about how FarmVille got 68 million monthly active users, and how Cafe World grew to 30.7 million monthly active users within a couple of months. The conference will also have Sebastien DeHalleux, COO of Playfish, which EA just bought for as much as $400 million.

“We’re thrilled with the caliber of speakers who have signed up to talk about app discovery amid a ton of noise,” said Dean Takahashi, lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat. “They can settle once and for all whether getting noticed is an art or a science.” Takahashi not only covers these trends for VentureBeat but is the event’s curator and will be moderating one of the sessions at the conference.

Ski Challenge 10 has launched

December 3, 2009 by gamespress

The world´s biggest Ski Race online again!

For the sixth consecutive season Greentube AG, developers of free-to-download 3D games, launched the virtual ski event for its 11 media partners all across Europe, including Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland Slovenia, Croatia and Norway. Ski Challenge represented what was the beginning for Greentube who went on to develop and release a portfolio of successful 3D sport games, such as Football Challenge and Mountain Bike Challenge, which are now followed by a fan community numbering in excess of nine million gamers from around the world. In summer 2009 Greentube developed a similar format with the release of the VW Polo Cup (www.polocup.at).

Ski Challenge 10 introduces two brand-new runs to the well-known line-up already available. The first is Beaver Creek, Colorado, USA, while the second will be revealed along with a range of technical improvements at www.ski-challenge.com and on the sites of its partners. Further highlights include general upgrades concerning the performance of the game and its user-friendliness. Ski Challenge will also be available to MAC users. As has been the case in previous years, Ski Challenge 2010 can be downloaded to mobile devices. Mobilkom and Swisscom are cooperation partners, and an iPhone version is in development as well to be launched in a few weeks´ time.

Last season an astounding 260 million online runs and a total of more than 600 million races (including offline)were registered. Thanks to the enthusiasm of the loyal fan base, which has grown to six million gamers worldwide, Ski Challenge has become the world’s biggest ski race since its humble debut in 2005. Ski Challenge was the first of what became a
succession of 3D sport games, including last summer’s hit for Volkswagen, from the successful company located in Vienna’s 6th district. A dedicated team of more than 90 employees at Greentube has developed six 3D games in 13 languages for more than 30 Business-to-Business customers (primarily TV broadcasters such as Pro7, France Television, Swiss Television, BBC, NRK, CBC in Canada and Canal+) in Europe to date.

Like with all of the company’s 3D games, Ski Challenge is financed not only by large static campaigns, but also by a dynamic In-Game Advertising model, which allows the booking of advertising on the basis of national prices per thousand contacts. “This internationally leading advertising model used in our 3D sport games was developed by our own expert team here in Vienna,” says Greentube CEO DI Eberhard Dürrschmid. “Booking can be carried out via a web interface; the system works with local market prices and is dependent on purchasing power. Campaigns smaller in scale as well as limited in duration can also be booked.” Accompanying studies on the effectiveness of the advertising are continuously carried out in cooperation with international partners (such as the Europäischen Sponsoring-Börse). A collection of household names are among the companies advertised in Greentube’s games, including Siemens, Coca Cola, McDonalds, Raiffeisen, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Red Bull, Nokia, Adidas, Swisscom, Telenor and UPC.
