The Disney Marvel Team-Ups We’d Like To See [What If]

Now that Disney will soon be the parent company of Marvel Entertainment , we can begin brainstorming the ultimate video game crossovers between the House of Ideas and the Magic Kingdom. Marvel Kingdom Hearts Yeah, this one is easy. So easy that Kotakuite Goldenhearted already had the image above created before I even saved this article in my text editor. If Disney characters plus Final Fantasy character equals an awesome video game, just imagine what would happen if you thrown in Wolverine and Spider-Man – total freaking chaos. Realistically speaking, this is not a good idea for a game. This is, ‘Oh, we have access to new characters, let’s throw them in here.’ Still, makes for a rather lovely mocked-up screenshot. Marvel VS. Disney Whenever you have two diverse sets of beloved characters, your first instinct is to throw them into a fighting arena and watch them kill each other. It’s a universal truth, in effect ever since ancient Romans found themselves with a surplus of both lions and Christians. This is probably a title that will have to reside only in our collective imagination, as I cannot see Disney allowing anyone to create a game that involves punching Mickey Mous It’s probably much better off in our heads anyway. Marvel Disney WHAT IF … Downloadable Games Owen was actually teasing me earlier with instant messages suggesting new stories for Marvel’s WHAT IF… series of alternative reality comics, but after the first few it struck me as an extremely good idea…and not just from a Disney standpoint. Marvel’s WHAT IF… series would make for an amazing downloadable game franchise. Add in Mickey and friends, and you’ve got pure gold. Here are a few of Owen’s ideas: WHAT IF … Hannah Montana joined The Defenders? WHAT IF … Howard the Duck and Donald Duck Joined Forces? WHAT IF … Daredevil was trained by Darkwing Duck instead of Stick? We could do this for hours. Days even. image Disney Characters Dressed as Marvel Superheroes in Let’s Make a Billion Dollars Adventure Who needs the adorably super-deformed Marvel Super Hero Squad, when you can have Mickey Mouse dressed as Wolverine? You could take this concept, throw any old game around it, and sell millions of copy. Marvel Disney Heroes Kart Racing? Sold. Marvel Disney Heroes Table Tennis? I’ll buy two copies. Donald Duck just stands around looking vaguely like Bruce Banner? Game of the Year. image Ice Man / Walt Disney Marvel Team-Up The rumors were true! Walt Disney World is incased in an icy prison, and it’s up to X-Men founding member Iceman and the cryogenically-mutated Walt Disney to take down the evil forces of…does it really matter what evil forces they are fighting? Bobby Drake and Walt could pretty much kick anyone’s ass, so feel free to insert your own evil force into the blank space there. Try to make it something hot, so we can make full use of the fire/ice puns at Disney’s disposal. You’ve probably gotten the idea by now, and that last one was a stretch of both the imagination and the boundaries of good taste, so we’re going to turn this show over to you. When you wish upon a star, which Marvel/Disney crossover games do secretly yearn for? Top image by Khary Randolph

My preview of the upcoming Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga for the Wii seems to have a lot of people up in arms about graphics, gimmicks and general Wii skepticism. Far be it for me to be the only way the game can represent itself to skeptics and optimists alike. Get a load of this trailer and decide for yourself if the game is something you really want to play. On the Wii. With no motion controls whatsoever. For my part, I want to like this game. I dig dating mini-games and I think the Wii needs more JRPGs. However, I didn’t care for Valhalla Knights on PSP and I doubt moving the series to the Wii will have any impact on that — especially if motion controls aren’t even an option. Oh well, at least there’s online multiplayer. Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga is out this fall.

Metroid Prime Trilogy Lost its ‘Damn’ [Wtf]

In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Admiral Dane expresses his frustration with the Space Pirates by letting out a rather mild profanity. “Damn,” to be precise. In the Metroid Prime Trilogy , which released a week ago, it’s been scrubbed. See for yourself in the above comparison, uploaded yesterday by YouTube user ThunderChaosStudios. The cleanup didn’t affect the rating process at all. All three games in the trilogy were originally rated teen, and so is the trilogy. One wonders why someone went to the trouble of eliminating the only(?) swear word in the game, one you hear on television daily. I’ve contacted a Nintendo public relations rep for comment. If we hear back, we’ll update the post here. Metroid Prime: Corruptions Admiral Dane Drops the Curse Word [GoNintendo via Joystiq ]

Activision Boss Bets Games Will "Eclipse" Movies, TV [Activision]

Bobby Kotick , chief executive officer at Activision Blizzard and hero to gamers everywhere, is nothing if not confident. He’s so confident in the video game industry that he sees the potential for it to surpass movies and TV. That may be because his company is sitting on some of gaming’s biggest franchises— Call of Duty , World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero —or that Kotick’s just a little power hungry. But he tells Barrons, “I view the medium as having the potential to eclipse film and television.” And quickly. In five years or so. Bob may have a point. Much has been made of the decline of television viewership in favor of other distractions, including the internet and video games, both of which can take away valuable screen time from Hollywood’s cinematic and televised offerings. Plus, the TV doesn’t even have a snazzy plastic peripheral one can play with. Well, with the exception of the TV remote. Game-Changing Hero Is Poised to Rule [Barrons]

The Most Epic ‘M’ Rating Any Game Ever Got [Brutal Legend]

Brütal Legend’s ESRB rating summary just went up, and damn right it got an M – for MËTÅL. Double Fine ’s reaction, according to the Brütal Legend Twitter, was something along the lines of a “hell yeah it is!” The ESRB’s full listing is honest and straightforward, but I can’t help but be taken back to the days of the PMRC and its incredulous, chapter-and-verse descriptions of all the hideous things bands like Megadeth and Slayer put into their lyrics, which we already knew about like back in the sixth grade, duh. Read it for yourself. It is an unusually meaty entry. For some it’s a warning. For others, one of the greatest testimonials the game could hope to have. Brütal Legend Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 Rating: Mature Content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes Rating summary: This is an action adventure/role-playing game that tells the story of Eddie Riggs, a roadie who is transported to a mythical world of heavy metal rock. Eddie is armed with a guitar and a double-headed axe, which players can use to slash and dismember enemies. Players can also perform “face-melting solos” (literally melting enemies’ faces), meet humanoid creatures dressed like dominatrixes and brandishing whips, and liberate an army of rockers from a life of oppression. Although the storyline is often irreverent and whimsical, the depictions of violence are somewhat intense: Undead humanoids are dismembered with an axe (sometimes in slow-motion); a “Steel-Quilled Blade” causes human enemies to explode into gibs that rain down; machine guns, missile launchers, and sub woofers can be used to kill druids and other fantastical creatures. Eddie can also run over dozens of enemies with his hot rod, resulting in blood effects and more heads and limbs getting chopped off. During the course of the game, characters sometimes engage in suggestive dialogue intended for comedic effect (e.g., “Maybe with all your feedback, you guys could just blow me over the gorge” and “Playtime’s over. Now let’s get back to the orgy”). Players will also encounter “Skull Rakers” clad in bondage gear and amazon-like warriors dressed in leather outfits that partially reveal buttocks and breasts. Strong profanity (e.g., “f*ck,” “sh*t,” and “d*ck”) can be heard in the dialogue. Brütal Legend ESRB Description is Long, Totally Epic [Destructoid]

What Series Will Sony Re-Release On Blu-Ray Next? [Let's Fantasy]
August 31, 2009 by admin

On the one hand, Sony’s decision to re-release God of War 1 & 2 on Blu-Ray seems selfish. A chance to force many people to re-purchase a game they already own. But on the other, it sets an interesting precedent. After all, it’s not like the set is being released out of the blue. There’s a new God of War game coming, and what better way to drum up (or dredge up) interest than to get people playing, and talking about, the first two games again? So it got us thinking: since this is as much a marketing move as it is a service to fans, what other upcoming PS3 games are there to market that have PS2 prequels you can repackage on Blu-Ray? These (for GT5, FFXIII and The Last Guardian) are the obvious ones. But moving beyond the marketing side of things, are there any other series you’d like to see thrown together on a single disc, cleaned up to 720p and given a second chance on the shelf?

The new firmware update has it, bringing new XMB functionality, a status indicator, a friends list redesign, dynamic themes, avatars, and much more. Free and premium avatars show up in your status bar, but the most prevalent of the changes is a status bar in the top right of the screen, which shows your avatar, your user icon, what you are up to, and a mail icon, in case you have messages waiting. Messages from your friends now appearing in their respective profiles. The games and video categories of the cross media bar will now feature shortcuts to the PlayStation Store, reflecting downloadable content and related items available. Firmware 3.0 is supposedly the last major PS3 firmware update this year.
